AWC 2018 NDS, 2018 Edition, 2018 – NATIONAL DESIGN SPECIFICATION FOR WOOD CONSTRUCTION
This Specification defines the methods to be followed in structural design with the following wood products:
– visually graded lumber
– mechanically graded lumber
– structural glued laminated timber
– timber piles
– timber poles
– prefabricated wood I-joists
– structural composite lumber
– wood structural panels
– cross-laminated timber
It also defines the practice to be followed in the design and fabrication of single and multiple fastener connections using the fasteners described herein.
Structural assemblies utilizing panel products shall be designed in accordance with principles of engineering mechanics (see References 32, 33, 34, and 53 for design provisions for commonly used panel products).
Structural assemblies utilizing metal connector plates shall be designed in accordance with accepted engineering practice (see Reference 9).
Shear walls and diaphragms shall be designed in accordance with the Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (see Reference 56).
This Specification is not intended to preclude the use of materials, assemblies, structures or designs not meeting the criteria herein, where it is demonstrated by analysis based on recognized theory, full-scale or prototype loading tests, studies of model analogues or extensive experience in use that the material, assembly, structure or design will perform satisfactorily in its intended end use.
